Bay of Bengal is located at Ngwesaung Beach, Irrawaddy Region, a 4 hour drive from Yangon. The site came with the rough concrete structure for 12 buildings. The current owner wished to create a new design and look for the resort, but using the existing skeletons. The challenge was to come up with a design concept that would integrate the existing structures while giving some logic to the rather haphazard siting previously planned and to allow for future expansion. We decided to spread out the program for Bay of Bengal, creating instead a series of unique pavilions connected by walkways. From the entry gatehouses to the reception building, the gift shop/business center pavilion to the restaurant, the spa building to the pool and bar, guests are encouraged to explore the 15 acre beachfront site. The architectural features of this project is twisting the traditional Myanmar gable roof, creating an angled spine that connects the various functions of the hotel. This was quite a challenging structural feet for local carpenters, and we used a combination of computer model renderings and physical models to help illustrate the structure.
