Dulwich College Yangon, Pun Hlaing Campus

Dulwich College Yangon, Pun Hlaing Campus

Driven by the demand for high quality primary education in Yangon, Dulwich entered into a partnership with Yoma Strategic Holdings in 2015 to develop an all age school at a site adjacent to Pun Hlaing Estate. The development delivered over a 2-year program, included master planning of the 50,000 m2 (13 acre) campus site and construction of the first phase of the school.

The 5,000 m2 first phase expanded an existing early years facility, adding classrooms, a 350-person black box theater, library, science rooms, art / design laboratory, and a full-sized sports field. This phase accounted for 132 of the 488 pupils expected for the entire campus.

The biggest design challenge was the phasing of the development which required planning of adjacent residential sites to ensure that the school took advantage of the highest and best use of the land. By placing the development on the northwest corner of the site, the developer was able to at once provide access to the school to outside parents while using the school to buffer the residential properties from the nearby industrial zone. At a more detailed level, the phasing had to consider an eventual decamping of the pre-existing buildings once the new early years building was established. This required foresight for the placement of public roads and future power infrastructure relocation.
